Video and Post Production by Gary Olsen

One of my favorite teachers at the District is Hempstead High School's vocal music director, Theresa Slade. Every year she takes her Penn Avenue Show Choir students on a mission. They tour businesses, sing for organizations, and the finale every holiday season is the Hempstead Trolley Tour. The tour takes the group to area retirement and convalescent homes where they perform for the residents. Just before their final number, they meet and talk with their audience members, and it is the most touching experience one can witness.

Our nation's elderly are fortunate in one respect that modern medicine has contributed much to their quality of life and provided them with longevity unprecedented in our world's history. However, the older one gets, the more likely it is we outlive our loved ones, friends and family members. Family traditions become fond memories, and health care professionals and volunteers do their best to bring them some cheer during the holiday season.

"This experience is extremely valuable for our young people," explains Theresa. We provide entertainment and warmth at Christmas, and our students receive a gift as well."
