Sound Safari microphone traveled to Irving Elementary to get some
impressions of the first day of school. Irving is literally bursting
at the seams this year, especially with the influx of new students
and all-day, every-day kindergarten.
Irving Elementary's principal is Barb Schoenauer,
and on the first day of school, she's out on the sidewalk meeting
and greeting students and parents. She's checking her watch to
determine if the buses will be on time. They were, despite the
incredible traffic on Pennsylvania Avenue this morning.
Barb
along with several teachers who are also out on the sidewalk are
watching out for little lost youngsters. Barb spots a girl in
tears and she immediately grasps the child gently and looks into
her face with the softest of voices asking her where she thinks
she needs to be. It's a touching scene repeated several times
before the first bell rings.
For some students, the first day of school is
one of eager anticipation with the prospect of seeing old friends
and making new ones. For others, it can be filled with fears that
may seem trivial to an adult, but are very real to a small child.
"I can't find the room I'm supposed to go to," came
the tearful response from one small student as Barb intervened.
"Here, let me take you right to where you need to be,"
said Barb assuringly as she grasped the childn's hand... the one
that wasn't wiping away tears and a runny nose.
