Ok, here's an interesting research supported fact. Students engaged in organized after-school activities with their peers and supervised by an adult are far less likely to drop out of school.

See this exciting video that features a new initiative in the Dubuque Community Schools to get kids involved in after-school activities. This strategy was made possible through a successful grant application by Shirley Horstman and Ruth Ellis. Shirley is our Student Services Administrator and Ruth Ellis came out of retirement to help pull the community partners together to provide the comprehensive program that the grant required.

What kind of programs are offered? Everything from sports to books. There are about 20 area agencies and organizations partnering with the district to provide the programs including the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, Dubuque Recreation Dept., Swiss Valley Nature Preserve, E.B. Lyons Nature Center, Mines of Spain, Dubuque Community Y, Dubuque Carnegie Stout Library, and the list goes on.

There will be cooking classes, field trips, leadership classes, access to technology, even classes on song writing magic, and perhaps the program that is one of the most interesting is an art and movie making after school program that will have kids making jewelry, accessories, paintings, and movies! Yes filmmaking.

And what about the poetry slam classes that will explore the meaning of words and words in verse? Inspired by the hip-hop culture, it is a fascinating voyage for students into creative expression. Very cool.

If you know a middle schooler that is not engaged or involved in such activities, do everything in your power to encourage them to participate. All teachers and administrators have the information. It's never too late to join in.
