Washington Does a "Fantasticks" Production

Video Clip and Still Images of Washington's Annual Spring Production by Gary Olsen

May 10, 2002

ouble casting means two of virtually everything... except the chorus, of course. This provides ample opportunity for the many talented players a director like Dorothy Gibbs has available, and that makes a lot of appreciative parents even more appreciative. As you might suspect, it becomes twice the work for the directors, makeup artists, costumers, script coordinators, and nearly everyone else behind the scenes. It's all worth it, of course. Combine this abundance of talent with one of the best auditorium theaters in the district, a long and illustrious legacy of great musical moments on the Washington stage, and sold out houses for every performance, and that spells success in anyone's play program. There were approximately 200 students involved in this production of The Fantasticks. Add to this gigantic cast the countless parent and teacher volunteers, and, well, that's a lot of pizza.

The photos at right are still images from the video. Click on them. An enlarged version appears in your browser suitable for printing. Click on the button at right for complete instructions.

We've prepared a short video highlight reel of the company's last dress rehearsal less than a week before their premier. It gives us full access to the auditorium to do photography without disturbing audience members. Often during such rehearsals, little last minute bugs are worked out of the production. One of those bugs was El Gallo's mustache which kept coming loose. A makeup technician came to the rescue while the production continued. El Gallo moved with grace and dignity to the edge of the stage where adhesive was waiting. He was administered to with expertise resembling that of a collector mounting a butterfly specimen, and El Gallo never lost a beat. Watch for it in the video clip.

The extremely talented orchestra is in the pit, makeup is nothing short of extraordinary, and the set is expertly painted and lighted. Enjoy this 10 minute Musical Moment. If you would like to know how to view our many video and audio clips on your computer, the instructions and links to software are below.

Instructions For Those Outside of Our School Network (The General Public)

We are now providing a choice of RealPlayer applications for you to download and install on your computer to enable you to view the video and audio files. One is RealPlayer8 and the other is RealOne Player, which is an excellent player with many new features. It's easy to install, so just follow the on-screen steps. You will be required to register with Real.com, but these are free software applications (there are versions you can pay for if you choose, but they are not necessary for basic viewing and listening).

Which Player is Best for Me?

Of the two types of free players available, RealPlayer 8 is the traditional player that is free and will work beautifully to access Web based multimedia files from our site. There is also a new player available, which is also free, called RealONE. Either player will probably work for your operating system. If your system is older (Windows 95, NT), however, you may want to use the RealPlayer 8 software. If you are running a newer, faster system like Windows 98, ME, XP, or 2000, go for the RealOne player.

Macintosh Owners:

You can get a RealPlayer for Macintosh, Visit Real.com to download their free player options. Remember, look for the FREE players. They are sometimes difficult to find on their Web site.

Oh, and one more thing... sometimes when you click on a sound or video file in our Web site with the RealPlayer installed, you get a little commercial window that pops up on your desktop. It's annoying, but a small price to pay for the privilege of having the free RealPlayer on your system. Just click it off, and it will disappear.

Instructions For Machines on our School Network (Teachers and Staff)
We are recommending (and IT is supporting) RealPlayer8. This is for ALL computers on our network (in all school and administration buildings throughout the District). This includes all Windows 2000 machines. Click here to get the free player from our network server. If you do not have administrative priveleges, please call your building media specialist to help you.
