his Audio Essay is interesting because it not only talks about how a business can creatively partner with a school district, but it shows how thoroughly involved individuals can become with their local schools. Alliant Energy is on a mission to do whatever they can to inspire the young engineers and scientists of tomorrow. It not only makes good sense, but good business as Alliant seeks to cultivate future employees for not only themselves but their valued customers.

Bringing a school textbook to life for students can be a challenge. The Alliant Energy Foundation is making that task easier for Dubuque Community School District science teachers by bringing educational videotapes into the classroom.

The Foundation provided funding to the Dubuque Community School District to purchase eight complete sets of the Science Screen Report (SSR) and Science Screen Report for Kids (SSRK) video encyclopedia. The videotapes address timely, yet timeless, topics related to science, engineering and technology in a colorful and lively format. All 18 of the school district’s elementary, junior high and high schools will have access to the materials.

According to John Larsen, managing director for Alliant Energy, funding the video collections is an investment in the communities’ young people. "We recognize that today’s students are the employees and customers of tomorrow," explains Larsen. "Our aim is to help students understand and appreciate the world around them and motivate them to consider pursuing science-related careers."

SSR and SSRK programs are produced by Allegro Productions, a former Time Incorporated company, and are endorsed by the National Science Teachers Association. The videos can be used in their entirety, or in segments according to curriculum. A thoroughly researched teacher’s guide, prepared by a committee of educators, accompanies each issue of both series. The guide, which provides lesson strategies for educators, includes a program overview, topical background information, suggestions for critical thought, discussion and further study, a glossary, career possibilities and related references and Web sites.

Shirley Horstman, math and science coordinator for the Dubuque Community School District, says the videos will complement the math and science curriculums currently in place at Dubuque’s schools. "As educators we are always looking for ways to engage our students in the learning process," says Horstman. "The videos are an effective means to open minds, stimulate interest and bring relevance to topics that sometimes seem remote to students. We can’t thank Alliant Energy enough for making these valuable education tools available to us."
