Haugen Wins National Science Award
Jane Haugen,
first grade teacher at Kennedy Elementary School, is a 2000 Presidential
Award Winner for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching
in Elementary Education.
The award
includes a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant of $7,500 to
Kennedy Elementary School. Haugen is responsible for determining
how the money is to be spent at Kennedy to improve the math and
science program over the next five years.
As a 2000
Presidential Awardee, Haugen and a guest will be invited to Washington,
D.C. on March 6th, for a four-day event that will include
activities that highlight Haugen's leadership abilities. Haugen
will meet with recognized national, state, and local officials,
as well as other Presidential Award winners. The activities of
the four days are the equivalent of being at a major math and
science conference. The big difference in this event is that Haugen,
and the other award winners, are the stars of the show and they
will receive VIP treatment while in Washington. The entire Dubuque
Community School District, and especially Kennedy Elementary School,
will benefit from Haugen's participation in this national honor.
Haugen truly is a national leader in math and science education.
