Hempstead have re-invented how technology is delivered to teachers
in their buildings.

Getting a driver's license would possibly be a nightmare. Most
of us have enough trouble using our first language correctly.

Urban Education Network:
The Dubuque CSD is a proud member of the Iowa Urban Education
Network. The organization brings together the largest eight
urban school districts in the state. These include Des Moines,
Sioux City, Davenport, Council Bluffs, Waterloo, Iowa City,
Cedar Rapids and Dubuque.

CPR training recertification occurred which involved over 55
employees of DCSD.

graders making a contribution in a state-wide environmental

the Forum.

School Creates Mural that Reflects on the History of Learning:
A group of Irving school students have had the opportunity to
leave a legacy for their school and acquire some knowledge at
the same time.

High School Music All State Best. The
Iowa High School Music Association has designated sixteen Hempstead
and Senior musicians as among the best in the state.

music performed on local radio station stars District students. The DuTRAC Community Credit Union, KGRR 97.3 and the Dubuque

Dubuque puts Table Mound get on the Air Table
Mound Elementary will be the site of a unique low-powered radion
station partnership with Radio Dubuque, owners of KDTH, KAT
FM, and KGRR FM.

and Dirty with Mississippi Mud It began as a meeting
to discuss collaboration between the Dubuque Community Schools
Art Department and the Mississippi Mud Pottery Studio. It ended
with some very talented teacher/artists doing what they do best...creating.

Band hosted by Senior High Musicians
- Chamber
of Commerce Carrer Day a Succes: High school students
from the tri-state area attended the Career Exploration Day
2000 event at Five Flags Civic Center on October 19, 2000. The
annual event was co-sponsored by the Dubuque Area Chamber of
Commerce and the Dyersville Area Chamber of Commerce.

Students Use ICN to Tell Others About Dubuque: Some Jefferson Junior High 8th graders participated
in a recent distance learning class over the Iowa Communications
Network. They actually did more than participate, they presented
to several sites throughout Iowa via the fiber optics network.

A School Odyssey is the theme for an entertaining and
informative exposition of all things Dubuque Community Schools.
The even is scheduled for May 19, Saturday, in the midst of
Dubuque's annual spring arts festival, DubuqueFest.

October 13, 2000: On Thursday, October 12th, nine Table Mound
students accompanied by staff went on a mission of good will
to Finley Hospital. The second and third graders represented
their classes and delivered hundreds of tray bouquets for the "Meals On Wheels" program.

Dr. Jane Petrek stands beside her pride and joy... a gallery
of student art and letters from a different school each month.
This month it's Prescott School. There are many fine examples
of children's artworks including handmade books, writings and
three-dimensional objects of art.

students participate in Instrumental Beginner Nights:
Was that sound a toot? It sounded like a honk? Maybe it
was a blat? Over 250 district music students experimented
with toots, honks and blats earlier this school year during
the Instrumental Music Department Parent/Beginner Nights.

New
Teachers attend First Workshop: On August
16th new teachers, counselors, and nurses kicked off the
2000-2001 school year by attending an all day orientation,
conducted by Nancy Bradley, Director of Staff Development
and School Improvement.

Music
Awards: High School Marching Band is an activity where
education, musicianship, creativity, entertainment, dedication,
talent and hard work all meet with fantastic results. All
of the elements that make Marching Band exciting came to Iowa
City on September 30 in the "Little Hawk Classic" Competition.

Hedeman
to Hall of Fame: Dubuque speech teacher Frances Hedeman
is just as excited to tell of her students that have gone
on to be college professors or officials at the United Nations
as she is to tell of students who are working actors in Los
Angeles and New York. Hedeman, 53, has been the speech and
theater teacher at Senior High School since 1970.
- Brain
Research Workshop: What is the impact of recent brain
development research on early childhood education? That question
was explored by key district administrators at an October 2,
2000 workshop sponsored by Loras College.
- Enrollment
Decline in Reverse? Ron Goerdt, Financial Manager for
the district, is completing his annual task of compiling the
enrollment numbers for Dubuque Schools. These numbers are critical
since the State of Iowa uses them to apportion state money which
we depend on for our operation.
- Effective
Teaching Expert Presents Workshop to District: Administrator Charlotte Danielson,
author of the best-selling teacher evaluation method called "A Framework for Effective Teaching," led an in-service
for Dubuque Community Schools principals and administrators.
