Lego my Eggo!

Carver Elementary Students build a Lego programmable robot to compete in a problem solving competition to reduce food borne illnesses caused by salmonella bacteria found on eggs. And get ready for this: They won first place in the statewide contest at Iowa State University.

January 2012

filmed by Gary Olsen, DCSD Media Developer

Approximate Length 5 minutes

Top, meet BOB the Carver team's robot, a completely programmable droid and not a remote control unit.. Above, the bowl with bacteria killing UV lights built into the lid to kill salmonella bacteria found in eggs. The judges enjoyed the bowl so much they encouraged the kids to pursue a patent.

Toymaker Lego, along with Iowa State University and several local and regional sponsors, have devised the competition to encourage young scientists in honing their analytical, math, and collaborative problem solving skills. Legos are excellent fast prototyping building materials that can be made into robots among other things.
