Carver Student Draws on Her Love of Math
December 2011
Approximate Length 4 minutes
alle Smith loves art and loves math. She is truly a student who has no problem mingling the two loves into a single project. In this case, a national art contest sponsored by educational publishing company McGraw Hill. McGraw Hill is working on a book project in which they want students to illustrate the lessons. According to GAT coordinator and teacher, Donna Schmitt, who discovered the contest on the Internet and encouraged student to submit entries, "I was pleasantly surprised when one of our students, Calle, was named a finalist."
There are all kinds of prizes the school will receive if she wins. High tech white board visualizer, a computer, a bunch of school supplies, and books (do you think?). Plus the winning artworks will be put on display in an art gallery in New York City.
In art as in writing, it's best to draw upon what you know. Calle's art piece features her shopping for clothes in a department store and she must determine her budget in the purchase of pairs of skinny jeans.
We'll keep you posted on the outcome. Meanwhile, enjoy this video that Crazy Cam creator, Gary Olsen produced at Carver featuring interviews with Calle and Donna Schmitt.
