to the Web Work Group for the Carnegie-Stout Public Library
Foundation Centennial Cellebration The Appraisal Art
Event Project Committee (that's a mouthful, isn't it?). This
site will serve as an information clearing house on the Dubuque
Community School's Web for all involved in the project. It's
an excellent opportunity to catch up with what's going on
and who is involved with the project. Mark this site on your
favorites so you can return to it quickly. Information is
being added all the time. We hope you enjoy the progress and
direction this project takes. You might know, anything involving
chickens is going to be a little whacky.

Q&A:
My school
has been designated to display at the Rocco Buda Art Gallery
for May 18th. Will we be displaying inside or outside of the
gallery? It may make a difference in how we mount projects.
Thanks. --Vicki Recker
Answer
from Donna B: Congratulations! All art work will be INSIDE
Rocco Buda Gallery from June 1-June 30th. Either free-standing
or on the walls. Prepare your work accordingly to be hung.
Rocco Buda workers will transport all 1st, 2nd, 3rd place
and designated Honorable Mentions to the Rocco Buda Gallery
from DBQ FEST to the C-S Library and then to the Gallery.
You, must, however, pick up ALL art work on June 30th. Also,
all art work at the Gallery MAY BE SOLD. Please designate
a price.

Here's
a picture of the teeshirt that is available from the Library!
Way cool!

MEETING: note change of week day and time!! Thursday, May
9th, 4:00 and
4:30
(introductory talk at each time and LOTS of time for questions)
ALL ARE WELCOME, EVEN IF YOU HAVE NOT ATTENDED BEFORE.
In attendance
(as signed in) Cathy Krueger (St. Joe, Key West), Janet Marxen
(President, C-S Library Foundation, Kim Becker (Nativity),
Connie Kessler (St. Joe, Key West),Lynn Kroch ski (Hoover),
Jean Gullikson (C-S Library), Connie Twining (DBQ Fine Arts),
Pam Peckosh (Nativity), Cheryl Werner (Audubon), Randy Strube
(East DBQ), Lori Lahey (Nativity), Charlotte Uhlik (St. Joe
the Worker), Donna Bauerly (Coordinator, "Appraisal Project"--DBQ
C-S Lib. Foundation). Thanks to this faithful crew. These
and a few others have been at almost every meeting and represent
you well!
CHECK
LISTS, DUTIES AND VOLUNTEERS
ENTRY
DELIVERY, VOLUNTEERS: DATE AND TIME (OPENING AND CLOSING AND
WHILE THERE)
1. See
"Check List" for areas of attention: "Appraisal
DBQ FEST DAY," Saturday, May 18th, 2002. (separate e-mail
for a copy of the Check List.
2. Volunteers:
Individuals are and will be assigned to each area indicated
on the Check List. These individuals come from Library
staff, Foundation and Trustee members, School personnel, parents,
older students, or any other willing and eager volunteers!
PLEASE: each school should begin recruiting individuals to
help out at designated sites. Each individual school may determine
length of stay at the site--e.g. an hour, two hours
.
(We also welcome volunteers to be "free roamers"--folks
willing to go from site to site to see that all is well and
if anything is needed). These designated sites will be assigned
to you by May 1st or sooner. Schools will be at just ONE designated
site. No school workers need to be at the Library sites (where
all written work, all performances and some art work will
be). But those Library entries MUST STILL BE BROUGHT TO THE
LIBRARY ON MAY 18TH, 8 am BY A SCHOOL VOLUNTEER.
3. Times
are from 8 am (to deliver all entries to designated sites)
to 3pm for the closing.
4. All
original entries MUST BE AT THE DESIGNATED SITE by 8 am on
Saturday, May 18th, 2002.
5. All
FIRST, SECOND, THIRD PLACE AND HONORABLE MENTION entries will
also go to the Rocco Buda Gallery after DBQ
FEST for a June exhibit. Connie Twining and her crew will
pick up ALL OF THESE ENTRIES from the designated sites at
3pm at
the closing time on Saturday, May 18th.
6. ALL
OTHER ENTRIES at each site MUST BE PICKED UP BY SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS
at 3pm on Saturday, May 18th and
brought back to the individual school.
7. Workers
at these sites must be vigilant so that no art work "takes
a walk,"--that is, no one steals a piece of art!
8. One
person should always be in charge of the money bag and see
that there is a next person on watch specifically in charge
of this money bag. Connie Twining will pick up money from
each site at least twice during the period from 9am to 3pm
(showing time). The money will be from orders for a 2nd printing
of Appraisal T-shirts (more directions later in this set of
directions).
9. Each
site will have 2 tables and 2 chairs (Connie Kessler will
bring these to the sites and remove them at 3pm at closing).
Thank you, Connie K. and crew!
10. Each
school should create a school identification sign (this sign
may be free-standing or attached to
one of
the two tables. However, do NOT make the signs too big, since
there will usually be 3 schools assigned to a site. Use water
proof markers just in case it sprinkles. No thunderstorms
are allowed on May 18th.
11. Pam
Peckosh will have some plastic "hangers" for art
work at the sites. If you think your art work should be hung
from the table (limited space), ask for those hangers from
Jean Gullikson at the Children's Area of the Library. Call
ahead to Jean, please. 589-4183, Ext. 5. Probably wise to
have your art work with these hangers on (!) before you bring
it on May 18th. Twine or fish line should be strung between
the plastic hangers. Questions? e-mail Pam Peckosh at scotlandqe2@hotmail.com
or peckosh@mchsi.com
12. You
could bring a laundry rack or a trellis, if you have them,
from which to hang your art work. Be creative! Some hanging
art work can also be at the Library, if so designated by the
judges--you need NOT have volunteers at the Library for any
art or written work there. Just at your site.
13. Once
you know your designated site, please go check it out to see
the area for dimensions, possibilities. (All sites are along
the Cultural Arts Corridor, and yes, I will email another
map!--it's also on the Web site.) http://www.dubuque.k12.ia/us/chicken
14. Once
you know your table neighbors (others schools with you at
your site, you might contact them and make a group plan).
About 3 schools at each site. 2 tables available at each site.
15. All
written work and performances are at the Library and are under
the charge of Pam Peckosh so if you have questions, call her
556-1132 or e-mail: scotlandqe2@hotmail.com or peckosh@mchsi.com
16. All
2-D and 3-D art are in charge of Connie Twining. Questions:
call her at 583-6870 or e-mail her at conkybird1@aol.com MOST
2-D and 3-D art work is at Cultural Arts Corridor Sites.
17. All
tapes of performances that we already have will be integrated
into ONE TAPE by Doug McCullum, and there will be a continuous
running of this tape in the room near the Rotunda (2nd floor,
near Children's Area). However, any one may request an individual
tape to be shown at any time. Someone will be there to run
these tapes.
ROCCO
BUDA SHOW
1. ALL
FIRST, SECOND, THIRD PLACE WINNERS AND DESIGNATED HONORABLE
MENTIONS will go to the Rocco Buda Gallery (Loras Blvd) after
DBQ FEST, for the month of JUNE show. Connie Twining and her
crew will pick up all these entries from
every site after the closing at 3pm on Saturday, May 18th.
School volunteers, please, DO NOT TAKE ANY ART WORK AWAY
WITH A 1ST,2ND,3RD place winner ribbon on it or an Honorable
Mention sign at the closing at 3pm on May 18th.
Ribbons
will be placed on art works by Appraisal Crew, beginning at
8am on Saturday, May 18th.
Some sign
will be placed on the Honorable Mentions as well.
HOWEVER,
each school should label their own 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Honorable
Mentions at the your school first--just be sure the label
is well affixed!! It may be on the front or back or by a tag
but the label should be evident!!
2. All
school personnel may pick up these winners from the Rocco
Buda Gallery at the end of June. Specific date for that to
be announced.
PRIZES:
RIBBONS, T-SHIRTS, ETC.
1. All
1st, 2nd, 3rd place winners (even individuals in groups) will
receive an appropriate ribbon, to be placed on the art work
by the Appraisal Crew, beginning at 8 am on Saturday, May
18th. Those ribbons will stay there for the Rocco Buda Gallery
Show.
2. All
individual first place winners will also get an Appraisal
T-Shirt (see separate section for more information). Group
first place winners (large groups) will just get ONE T-Shirt
and that will go to the individual room or art room. Teachers
could let individual students wear the shirt during various
days!!
Sorry,
we do not have enough money to print ribbons for all students
in a group. You could make your own paper ribbons???
3. If
we have enough money, we will have ribbons for Honorable Mentions
too, but--at least--there will be a special certificate for
these HM's.
4. Remember:
ALL entries that have come to the Library are already WINNERS
and will be shown during DBQ FEST, Saturday, May 18th. Lots
of pride to go around!!
CERTIFICATES
FOR ALL WHO ENTERED:
1. We
MUST know how many students from each individual school did
any kind of entry, whether or not it made it to the final
10!!
2. Do
NOT send me the individual names--just e-mail me the NUMBER
of students who should receive a certificate of entry. This
number includes your 1st, 2nd, 3rd place and Honorable Mentions.
3. We
will send that number of certificates to your school and you
may write in the names--maybe you have someone who does beautiful
printing or even calligraphy! Thanks for that help.
T-SHIRTS
1. All
1st place individual winners will receive an Appraisal T-Shirt
2. These
T-Shirts are being created by Bryce Parks who will come around
soon to various schools to take some pictures of art
work and/or children. He will be sure he has permission before
"shooting."
3. Peter
Healy will put this integrated design on the front of T-Shirts
at his Plane Art Gallery. He has given us a really great price
break and thanks, Peter!
4. We
will try to deliver all 1st place T-Shirts before Saturday,
May 18th so students can wear them to the show!
5. Appraisal
Crew will also be "cooped out" in Appraisal T-Shirts,
as well--and certainly Gary Olsen will deserve one! Thanks
again to him for the continuing marvelous Web Site.
6. We
will have a 2nd printing of Appraisal T-Shirts. Samples of
the T-Shirts will be at each designated site. Order forms
will be there at each site. The cost of a T-Shirt is $10.00
and we MUST have the money up front (when you order your shirt).
Checks are acceptable. But no Credit Cards, please. There
will be money bags at each site and a responsible person to
hold the money. Connie Twining will pick up the money twice
during the day of May 18th.
A sample
of a LARGE T-Shirt will be at each site. You can order, S,
M,L, XL or XXL accordingly. These are all first-run T-Shirts.
7. In
about two weeks, you may pick up your ordered and paid-for
T-Shirt from Jean Gullikson at the C-S Children's Area. She
too, well deserves a T-Shirt and much more. Thanks to Jean
for ALL. We will inform you when the shirts arrive.
PERMISSION
FORMS
1. I
will forward (separate e-mail) a sample permission form for
names, etc. to be published ; form created by Nativity School.
This is the kind of form you can send home to parents, if
you have not already done so! Some Districts have different
rules. We will abide by those. For example, if NO NAMES are
to be attached, put all information on the back where it is
NOT visible. We need some identification to be sure art work
goes back to the owner school and child.
2. See
publicity area for more information on permissions.
ART WORK
FOR SALE
1. All
students MAY sell their individual art work at the ROCCO BUDA
GALLERY (1st, 2nd, 3rd and Honorable Mentions). If the
individual work going to Rocco Buda is NOT for sale, please
mark that clearly on the art work in some form or other.
2. If
the work is for sale, the price must be clearly marked somewhere
on the work. Connie Twining will affix a common price marking
after the piece is brought to the ROCCO BUDA GALLERY. Remember
she and her crew will pick up the Rocco Buda entries (all
1st, 2nd, 3rd place winners and designated Honorable Mentions).
3. No
piece may be taken from the Rocco Buda Gallery until the end
of June.
4. Any
questions about sale should be referred to Connie Twining.
See phone and email listed in these mintues. Conkybird1@aol.com
5. East
Dubuque Public School held its own silent auction of their
art work at their own site. However, all that art work will
STILL be at DBQ FEST and prize winners will still be at the
Rocco Buda Gallery until the end of June, even if it is already
bought.
6. Any
school may do as East DBQ did--hold an auction, if you like.
If you want direction about such an event, get in touch with
Randy Strube. 588-9144 or e-mail randystrube_78@yahoo.com
7. HOWEVER,
all pre-sold art work must still come to DBQ FEST on May 18th
and, if a prize winner, go to the Rocco Buda Gallery for the
month of June.
PUBLICITY
l. The
continuous tape of performances that Doug McCullum is compiling
may run many times on Channel 8. We will let you
know when and where as that time approaches.
2. We
will also contact Media Com with Tim McClain to see if they
will run the tape on Channel 45.
3. Janet
Marxen will send out a Press Release to all news stations,
TV stations and local papers (DBQ, E.DBQ and areas that
serve W.DBQ).
4. All
information will be on the main Web Site http://www.dubuque.k12.ia.us/chicken
5. All
schools may contact their churches--to have information in
church bulletins.
6. All
school web sites should post information and scanned pictures,
if possible.
7. Connie
Twining is contacting editors at JULIEN'S JOURNAL.
8. The
C-S Library Newsletter will have an article about the Appraisal
Project in the May edition.
9. We
will also contact Eric Mahlberg at Fox News.
10. EAST
DBQ is also binding all their entries (photos, Xerox) into
one booklet that they will publish and also sell. Another
idea you can use? Again, contact Randy Strube for more information,
if you like.
Any other
suggestions for publicity? Word of mouth is great, too. Encourage
all your students, their parents and other relatives and friends
to visit ALL the art work sites at DBQ FEST on Saturday, May
18th, from 9 am to 3pm.
AT THIS
POINT, FOR GENERAL QUESTIONS, PLEASE ADDRESS DONNA BAUERLY

Two
Great Books Available on Grant Wood
|
This
book is written and illustrated by Mike Venezia. It's
a somewhat humorous look at the works of Grant Wood.
Excellent for middle and high school students.
This
book and the one below are available at the Dubuque
Carnegie-Stout Public Library.
|
 |
| Wonderfully
written and beautifully illustrated, this best selling
book is more interpretive and comprehensive as it depicts
the life and times of Grant Wood and it explores more
deeply the artist's inspiration and methods. |
 |
Some
Project Background:
Carnegie-Stout
Public Library is celebrating it's 100th anniversary in 2002.
In anticipation, there have been committees established to
help plan and execute the centennial activities. One such
event is going to involve students in our area in a creative
enterprise based on the famous painting which is in the Library's
collection, Grant Wood's, The Appraisal.

|
Click
on the painting above to deploy a larger, more printable
version of The Appraisal which is 8 x 11 inches
(approximately) and is 300 dpi. CAUTION: If you have
a slow connection to the Internet, it may take some
time to fully download to your browser. Be advised that
the image will be larger than your screen, and you'll
likely only see a portion of it. Right click on the
large image to save it to a hard drive or appropriate
file on your computer. Then you can open the image in
an image editing program, or you can import and resize
the image in Microsoft Word or PowerPoint. You can also
print directly from the browser if you have a "Fit
to Page" command or if you set up your printer
to accommodate a landscape aspect ratio (wider than
it is tall). You may have to experiment. If you have
transparency material, you can print an overhead transparency
of the art for lecture purposes.
|
As you
will see in the details covered by this Web site, there are
all kinds of creative possibilities to involve students and
teachers in this celebration. The rewards of inspiring our
education community, both public and private, to help us celebrate
the virtues of our splendid Public Libarary along with Grant
Wood's connection to our community are limitless.
Okay,
what's a Web Work Group? It's a way of keeping in touch in
a virtual way on the Internet. We use the Web at the District
to keep everyone connected to a project. We can put a calendar
of events and deliverables here, save on paper by not publishing
exhaustive handouts. We can also post a diary of events and
recognition. Organizers can use the site as a way to pump
up the project to potential sponsors. This is also a way we
can keep instantly in touch with one another without overloading
each other's e-mail boxes.
The
Artist and the Painting
The
painting at the center of our creative endeavors is entitled
The Appraisal by celebrated Iowa Regionialist artist Grant
Wood (his self portrait at right). Originally purchased by
the Carnegie-Stout Public Library at the 1934 Iowa State Fair,
it was purchased with donated funds from a Dubuque patron.
The acquisition was not entirely without controversy since
it occurred during the depths of the Great Depression in 1934,
an event that hit Iowans particularly hard. There were actually
two paintings purchased from the exhibition, The Appraisal
and a somewhat unusual woman's portrait entitled, Victorian
Survival, which depicts an elderly woman with an elongated
neck wearing a cameo brooch on what seems to be a velvet ribbon.
These
paintings have been among the collection of the Carnegie-Stout
Public Library ever since, and they are presently housed at
the Dubuque Museum of Art among several of Wood's works. The
painting is currently on tour of the United States, but will
be returning to Dubuque very soon, and in time for the Centennial
Celebration of the Carnegie-Stout Public Library in 2002.
What is the painting worth today? Though the painting is not
for sale, conservative estimates put its value at approximately
$4.5 million, according to Nelson Britt, Director of the Dubuque
Museum of Art which now maintains the Wood paintings as part
of a larger collection of his drawings and prints.
At
right is perhaps Wood's most famous works, American Gothic.
The painting has been the subject of parody the world over,
a particular favorite among political cartoonists. The painting
is among the permanent collection of the Art Institute of
Chicago. It is considered by many art historians among our
great American masterpieces.
