he ceremonial scissors from the Dubuque Chamber Ambassadors clipped the red ribbon on this glorious occasion, the grand opening of George Washington Carver Elementary School, Radford Road, Asbury, Iowa. The mayor and city dignitaries were there in force, and school board members, and Dubuque's famous "Red Coats," ambassadors to new businesses and economic development in our area.
It was one year ago when ceremonial shovels turned the tough sod the prairie has always been known for signalling the start of construction of the new West End Elementary School Project authorized by the Dubuque Community School Board. At the time, community leaders explained the economic impact such a construction project has on the local economy and the long term effects it has on cultivating a strong and ready workforce, key ingredients to economic growth and development. "I think the community has come to the realization that quality education is the keystone of our economy," explains former school board member, Tom Barton, and who represented the Dubuque Area Chamber of Commerce at the dedication ceremony August 22.

The West End school is the third construction project funded by the local option sales tax that was approved by the voters. The total effort has been designed not just to address the areas of new residential growth in our city, but to "right size" all of the schools in the district according to superintendent John Burgart. Join in the celebration as we present this 12 minute video clip that features reflections of district and community leaders in the quest to invest in our children's education and that of future generations of young students.
Design architect was Straka Johnson, and the contractor was Portzen Construction.
