he
term "breaking new ground" has more than one meaning in
context of the long struggle the Dubuque Community Schools have
had to endure to build a new middle school building in our community.
If you recall, the sales tax vote that launched the financial possibilities
of a new middle school and soon, a new downtown elementary school,
passed by the slimmest of margins, but passed nonetheless. And building
the first new school in more than 30 years goes along with building
new credibility and confidence in a school board that has been one
of the most effective and productive school boards in decades when
you consider what they've managed to accomplish.

This movie is the best quality but represents the largest
file size. It is very suitable for presentations to large groups
if your computer has a large monitor or is connected to a projector.
You can easily enlarge the movie screen size in RealPlayer.
For best results for display purposes, you may want to download
the non-streaming file version at right. |
This
is a non-streaming file that plays on your computer after fully
downloaded (high speed connection recommended). if you wish
to keep a personal copy of the best quality movie file for your
collection, right click on the button above and select "Save
Link Target As..." This copies the movie to a spot you
designate on your hard drive or network server. Once you have
this file, you can make your own CD copy, and it is perfectly
suitable for large group presentations. You also need RealPlayer
software (free and available on this page) to play it. |
So
it was with pride the school board posed with golden shovel's poised
to turn the first spades of earth that would officially signal construction
could begin on a site in the heart of Asbury, the fastest growing
community in the entire state. As the population pushes westward
of Dubuque proper, the need for a new middle school was apparent.
Combine the population growth, with incredible commercial development
and a significant shift of students from private schools to public
in recent years, and the need for a school that will house 1,100
middle school students becomes a necessity. The total cost of the
facility will approach nearly $30 million when you add all associated
costs of the project such as desks, chairs, lab and multimedia equipment.
The
farmland on which the school is being built was purchased from the
Siegert family, Joe, and Ruth, who not only raised corn and cattle
on the land in their prime years, but raised a lovely family. Children
and grandchildren were on hand to witness the historical event and
even donned hard hats and turned a shovel of earth to commemorate
this event.
The
project's architect, Durrant Group, and the construction company,
Miron Construction, had several representatives on hand to celebrate
this occasion. The ceremony took place in front of the pole building
that served as the Siegert family livestock barn. Out of the wind
and inside the door of the barn was an easel on which the drawings
of the new school were displayed. Representatives were also on hand
from the City of Dubuque, Asbury, the Dubuque Ambassador "Red
Coats" and there were several neighbors who live near the project
who occupied the folding chairs that were set up by Buildings and
Grounds.
The
highlight of the ceremony came when Superintendent John Burgart
announced he would like any children who where on hand to grab a
shovel and participate in the earth turning. It was fun to watch
since the energetic future students of this school didn't stop with
one shovelful but proceeded to dig the foundation with enthusiastic
abandon as cameras snapped and video cameras whirred.

Instructions
For Those Outside of Our School Network (The General Public)
|
|
We are now providing a choice of RealPlayer applications for you to download
and install on your computer to enable you to view the video and audio
files. One is RealPlayer8 and the other is RealOne Player, which is an
excellent player with many new features. It's easy to install, so just
follow
the on-screen steps. You will be required to register with Real.com, but
these are free software applications (there are versions you can pay for
if you choose, but they are not necessary for basic viewing and listening).
Which
Player is Best for Me?
Of
the two types of free players available, RealPlayer 8 is the traditional
player that is free and will work beautifully to access Web based multimedia
files from our site. There is also a new player available, which is also
free, called RealONE. Either player will probably work for your operating
system. If your system is older (Windows 95, NT), however, you may want
to use the RealPlayer 8 software. If you are running a newer, faster system
like Windows 98, ME, XP, or 2000, go for the RealOne player.
Macintosh
Owners:
You
can get a RealPlayer for Macintosh, Visit Real.com
to download their free player options. Remember, look for the FREE players.
They are sometimes difficult to find on their Web site.
Oh, and one more
thing... sometimes when you click on a sound or video file in our Web
site with the RealPlayer installed, you get a little commercial window
that pops up on your desktop. It's annoying, but a small price to pay
for the privilege of having the free RealPlayer on your system. Just click
it off, and it will disappear.
