e are thrilled to feature the work of student artists from Bryant School, Carver, Fulton, Hempstead High School, Hoover School, Kennedy and Lincoln School. Our art teachers jury these monthly exhibitions, take the photos of the pieces and send them to me for inclusion in our monthly galleries on the Web and on cable TV Channel 16 on Mediacom's box or 97-6 if you use your flatscreen TV's onboard digital tuner.

I'm the creator of the Digital Fringe Gallery, Gary Olsen. I'm the Media Developer for the school district, and I came up with this concept because what student wouldn't want to see their work in a gallery or, in this case, on television?

We receive hundreds of comments about this feature from parents and community arts advocates alike. We had no idea this would become so popular, but to be honest, I had an inkling.

Besides being the media developer and a television producer for the district, I am a gallery artist myself, and my work can be found in collections all over the city. I so identify with young artists, and to think that a student is not self aware about their artistic talents would be a mistake. But they often don't start out knowing whether they have talent or not.

That's why it's so important to provide students with encouragement and support in their artistic endeavors. It gives them a sense of self worth and accomplishment that builds confidence in a student, and it can't help spill over to other subjects.

Never have doubts about the value of art education in our public schools. To deny students these opportunities to be creative would be a disaster. Because math, science, history, reading and writing are not enough to create productive citizens in our society and our economy. It's creativity that sets us apart from the rest of the world. Ours is the fertile soil in which the greatest ideas and innovations sprout. Why are the greatest inventions created in the US? Because, in large part, we teach our students to think and express themselves creatively.

Our creativity is the best thing about America.
