Facility Beliefs

 

PROGRAMS FOR 21ST CENTURY LEARNERS

We believe the Dubuque Community School District should:

§         Design or renovate educational spaces that accommodate teaching and learning that promote 21st century skills; employability, digital, global, civic, financial and health literacy (see Iowa Core Curriculum)

§         Incorporate flexible building designs that accommodate changing programs and technological needs

§         Support  high, middle and elementary school philosophies that support “house” concepts,   teacher collaboration, active engagement and flexible, small group learning communities for students and teachers

§         Bring all facilities to a safety and security standards

§         Continue to keep pace with technological advances for teachers and students

 

INCREASED OPPORTUNITIES

We believe the Dubuque Community School district should:

§         Provide equity in programming and facilities to the greatest extent possible

§         Provide multiple pathways to the high school diploma and post secondary options through facilities that can provide 24/7 learning.

§         Provide educational environments that allow for fluctuating enrollment(s) with optimal fiscal efficiency.

§         Focus facility improvements based on student need

Maintain a presence in all areas of the city boundaries based on increased student enrollment and demographics

·        Value outdoor and indoor spaces for student opportunity

 

FISCAL EFFICIENCY

We believe that our facilities should be renovated and/or constructed to:

§         Optimize fiscal efficiency by reducing and consolidating facilities

§         Develop community partnerships that contribute jointly to co-use facility opportunities

§         Examine options by the use of cost/benefit analysis

§         Consider uses for or disposal of current building property.

§         If needed, plan for strategic acquisition of property.

 

 

SUSTAINABILITY

We believe the Dubuque Community School District should:

§         Incorporate green space and sustainability in long term planning

§         Align to the City of Dubuque philosophy of sustainability (a community’s ability to meet the environmental, economic, and social equity needs of today without reducing the ability of future generations to meet their needs.)

§         Use alternative energy resources where possible

§         Model and incorporate ties across the curriculum to issues of sustainability and environmental stewardship
