Dubuque Community School District presents

Here's the latest news about Kids in the Kitchen, August 13, 2006:.

Mediacom Cable is broadcasting the Dubuque Schools production on it's State wide Iowa cable network. Now Kids in the Kitchen will be seen in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, the Quad Cities, and everywhere Mediacom provides cable service.

"This is an important step in the growth of our television show," says Gary Olsen, media producer for the Dubuque Schools. "It puts our brand out there state-wide, and if we become more popular and recognizable to a larger audience, it adds value for our sponsors." Kids in the Kitchen has received national recognition from the cable industry as one of the most innovative applications of cable television in the classroom.

Concept: A half-hour series television show on Mediacom Cable that teaches Grades 6-12 students how to prepare nutritious and creative dishes. The show is completely produced in a grocery store where we begin the process by actually shopping for all of the ingredients right in the food store.

Originally the concept involved a parade of guest chefs showcasing their signature dishes. But early in our casting process we encountered Jim Terry, chef of The Captain Merry Inn and Spa in East Dubuque. His suggestions to develop a friendly, kid-centric recipe list with fewer but fresher ingredients was more compatible with the curriculum that supports this concept of healthy eating.

Each show is divided into three segments: Shopping with the Chef, the food preparation segment, and Manners Make Magic.

Following food preparation (in the store in a specially designated area) there will be a special segment on proper manners and behavior in social situations by a teacher from the Dubuque Community Schools, Jan Mozena. The two-minute segments will cover dining etiquette primarily but may venture into other social situations as the season progresses. The segments are called "Manners Make Magic.".

Janet Mozena, Senior High Family Health and Consumer Studies Teacher, Joins the Cast of Kids In The Kitchen

Janet Mozena, a veteran Family Health and Consumer Studies teacher at Senior High, has signed on as a field producer and on-camera performer for Kids In The Kitchen. Janet will be producing a show segment on manners that will be featured in each of the 12 series episodes. Her approach is defining proper etiquette and manners when dining in an adult setting. Jan Mozena has been featured in the past three High School House Videos in which she supervises high school age aspiring interior designers as they participate in the building and decorating of a real house construction project.

Show Package: There will be 12 shows per season, and part of the package includes an end-of-season cookbook, and an ongoing website on which all shows will appear as well as on cable, and they can be downloaded and archived by fans. There are ample opportunities for sponsor exposure and brand placement throughout the production.

Background: Among the top health issues among K-12 students in America is childhood obesity. Appropriate diet, nutrition and proper eating habits are now an important part of our health and wellness curriculum. This television show will involve a broad representation from our community including educators, a food retailer, dietitian, and students along with their parents.

Schedule: The introduction of this series will coincide with the premier of the Dubuque Community Schools very own cable channel on Mediacom starting in January 2006. The beauty of being on our own cable channel is that we can repeat program this series throughout the day and night seven days a week. Mediacom has plans to offer the show on the statewide cable network that includes such markets as Des Moines and the Quad Cities. Mediacom is the largest cable operation in the state.

Production: The introductory food shopping segment and the good manners segment are filmed and produced in the traditional manner... one lightweight camera and a boom microphone. Our main cooking segment will be filmed in real time with three cameras and a field switcher courtesy of Mediacom and their fully equipped mobile production setup. Co-executive producers are Jim Barefoot of Mediacom Cable, Wally Brown, a retired area business leader and currently on the Board of the Dubuque Community Schools Foundation, Robert Parks, also on the Board of the Dubuque Community Schools Foundation, and Gary Olsen, Community Relations and Media Development for the Dubuque Community Schools.

im Terry is a chef on a mission. He has a passion for organic and naturally grown foods. He want to teach children and youth the art of food preparation. "Most of my best recipes have no more than five ingredients," explains Jim. "Cooking is fun and amazing, and I can hardly wait to get started on this project." Jim's reputation as a great Tri-State Area chef began in Galena, Illinois at the famed El Dorado. "The knowledge of cooking with fresh ingredients is becoming a lost art for the sake of convenience," explains Jim. "Food is important in our culture."

His tastes in cooking range from regional and traditional foods to dishes that are ethnically inspired. His resource of personal recipes has evolved into an exciting menu at The Captain Merry Inn in East Dubuque, Illinois. You can learn all about Jim yourself by listening to his interview. Meet Hy-Vee's Megan Dalsing, Our dietitian for Kids in the Kitchen!

egan Dalsing is a registered dietitian for Hy-Vee, one of the larges employee-owned food stores in the nation. You can almost always find her in Hy-Vee's newest venture, the Hy-Vee Health Market. This is a section of the store dedicated to whole, natural, and organic foods, and foods with no artificial or manufactured additives. Megan's lifestyle matches her career choice. She is currently in pre-production on another TV show we are working on in collaboration with Mediacom and Hy-Vee called "The Garden Organic."

Megan graduated from Rosary College, River Forest, IL, with a degree in nutrition and dietetics. Megan did her clinicals at Iowa State University and Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. She worked her way through high school and college at Hy-Vee, and now she does nutrition and fitness for Hy-Vee at Asbury Plaza. Megan also works with customers who have special dietary needs.

Megan is planting an all organic garden this coming spring with the help of some Dubuque Community School students, and we are going to film the progress on a weekly basis. There will be guests on the show from among the local farm and garden community, all people who have found their niche in organic growing of produce. So remember to stay tuned to this website for more details on these developments. Meanwhile, Megan is working with our executive chef, Jim Terry, on the recipes and ingredients that he will choose to feature on the show.
