usic is the heartbeat of a culture. Dubuque, Iowa is an extremely fortunate community since it supports and indeed promotes its very own symphony orchestra. Dubuque Community Schools' Director of Performing Arts Curriculum, John Woodin, approached district media developer, Gary Olsen, with an idea. What if we took a budding student musician and built a show around that student's discovery of symphonic music, the history of a piece, the geography, the composer, and the instruments that combine to form the final arrangement? One student became two students, and before long, we scheduled a meeting with William Intriliator, the conductor and musical director of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra.

You'll notice that the musicians are not wearing tuxedoes and black dresses, which are the traditional dress of symphonic musicians. This is because we elected to film each episode at a rehearsal, so musicians are in their street clothes. "I like this better," explains Gary Olsen."It makes the symphony more accessible in a way. And this gives us freedom to film the performance without disturbing and audience."

"The best part," explains John Woodin, "is we get to see William Intriligator's interaction with the musicians which is an important part of the show. Sometimes rehearsals are more interesting than the final performance."

We want to especially thank Mediacom and Jim Barefoot and Dustin Roth who are technical producers on this show, and without their expertise we couldn't bring you such entertaining productions. Jim supervises the shoot at Five Flags Theater, and Dustin supervises post production.
