Math

Dubuque Community School teachers and administrators are aware of the importance mathematics plays in our increasingly technological society. Quality mathematics instruction is vital to help students build confidence in their mathematical ability and to develop sound reasoning and problem solving skills. Actively engaging students in the construction of their mathematical knowledge is essential for long-term retention of concepts. All students are asked to learn in a variety of ways with a variety of tools-from the text, from the teacher, on their own, and from each other.

Building a solid foundation is critical to future mathematical success. At the elementary level, students receive daily mathematics instruction. In addition to other concepts, students are expected to explain solutions to problems, recognize geometry in their environment, and communicate mathematically, as well as master basic facts. Students are encouraged to use a variety of available tools as they endeavor to become real-world problem solvers.

Junior high students continue to study mathematics daily. They are encouraged to become independent thinkers who can pose problems as well as solve them. Conceptual understanding of rational numbers and integers is developed as well as standard calculation algorithms. Pre-Algebra and Algebra classes are also offered.

Two years of math are required at the secondary level. Options include courses that range from Applied Math to Advanced Placement Calculus. At this level, students make the transition from concrete to conceptual mathematics. Understanding moves from numbers to variables, from description to proof and from specific cases to general arguments. Students learn to value mathematical thinking- a cornerstone for lifelong learning.
