Season 1 Episode 4 Playing in a Combined Orchstra Fall 2009 Video by Gary Olsen
On one's musical learning journey, there are the opportunities to play with more experienced musicians, and it is an extraordinary experience not to be missed. In this episode we interview Tracey Rush, instrumental music teacher and director of the Roosevelt Middle School Orchestra. She is also a director at the Northeast Iowa School of Music which maintains an expansive program for adult musicians. In this episode we show the combined Roosevelt Orchestra with the Dubuque String Orchestra. Students and adults side-by-side and making incredible music together on stage in the magnificent Roosevelt Middle School Auditorium. This episode highlights the phenomenon we are calling "contact inspiration." Musicians have a bond that connects them in ways you can only understand if you are a musician yourself. When musicians come in contact with one another, they share a common language which is music. They typically share all manner of personal and professional insights into their individual craft. Even if two musicians don't play the same instrument, there is the opportunity for the cross pollination of ideas that occurs and that becomes mutually beneficial. In an orchestra, individual musicians become keenly aware that they are part of something much larger than themselves. In a collaborative environment, they can create something beyond their capabilities to something alone. Download an archival copy of this show to your hard drive.
