Minutes: DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICTEducational Programs CommitteeBOARD COMMITTEE MINUTESThis form is used by all multimember committees established by the Board of Education. Before any meeting is held, be sure you have met the requirements of Chapter 1037 Laws of the 67 th G.A., 1978 Session, Official Meetings Open to Public. Complete the Following Before Starting the Meeting
If any of the above data does not comply with the open meeting law, do not begin the meeting. Board members present: Tami Ryan, Matt Strelo. District representatives present: Lynne Devaney, Dr. Larie Godinez, Amy Hawkins, Mae Hingtgen, Rhonda Simpson, Shirley Horstman, and Joni Lucas. Ms. Ryan called the meeting to order at 3:30 p.m. at the Forum.
Approved.
Amy Hawkins provided a brief report on the athletics program. Her goals for 2012-13 is to meet with activities directors to develop a vision, district-wide coaches meeting in August, develop and supply each coach with a handbook of procedures/policies/expectations, and evaluation plan to evaluate coaches.
Ms. Devaney reported on the afternoon of this community meeting. People worked together to gain a single writing style. Lynne is the lead writer on school readiness, Shirley Horstman is lead writer on school attendance, Mary Ellen Carroll from Loras is lead writer on summer learning. They all left with homework. Future collaborative planning will include a year round school calendar. The application is due March 12, 2012.
Ms. Ryan would like to pilot an alternative calendar at Prescott since they are a charter school. Ms. Devaney said this was considered when the charter status was enacted. When you choose one school to have a different calendar, it makes it more unfriendly for families. This would affect older sibling caring for younger siblings, family vacations, etc. Summer school was offered at Prescott but families are not in town during that time and students did not attend. Staff at Prescott would need to be willing to have a different calendar. Child care providers would need to be involved in this conversation.
Mae Hingtgen, Rhonda Simpson, and Shirley Horstman reviewed the Gallup Student Poll (as requested by Every Child/Every Promise) as it compares to the Iowa Youth Survey. The Gallup Poll is a ten-year longitudinal study administered to all 5-12 graders and gauges student’s perception of hope, engagement and well-being, which are key factors that drive students’ grades, achievement scores, retention, and future employment. The Iowa Youth Survey is completed every two years by all Iowa students in grades 6, 8, and 11.
Mr. Strelo distributed information “Leading with Experience” by Experience Corps – engaging older adults as community leaders. This program connects seniors with volunteer opportunities in classrooms.
Mr. Strelo feels the District could do a better job of sharing best practice between educators. Ms. Devaney indicated that the District currently uses Japanese Lesson Study in math and social studies. The next meeting was scheduled for March 20, at 3:30 p.m. The meeting adjourned at 4:45 p.m. Joni Lucas, Secretary Board of Education
