A Survival Guide for Incoming Sixth Graders

Gary Olsen camera and post production

Brandon Noel location audio

ubuque's Eleanor Roosevelt Middle School students helped create this extraordinary video to help fifth grade students transition to middle school. It can be a scary place if you don't know where you're going, what you're going to do, and who you are going to meet. This is a critical time for adolescents especially as they move from the comforts of elementary school to a world in which one must assume more personal responsibilities. But it doesn't have to be scary.

In this video, students interview teachers, show you how to navigate through the school from the bus drop-off to the houses, from the cafeteria to the gym locker rooms.

What's fun about this video is it's not only chock full of useful information, but it's clear that the students that are featured in the show are having a really great time. It becomes apparent that Roosevelt Middle School is a supportive learning environment on many levels.

So join our young hosts as they take you on a tour of Eleanor Roosevelt Middle School. And we hope you enjoy your adventure.

This production made possible by an Iowa Department of Education Safe and Drug-free Schools Grant.
