Washington Middle School Presents A Middle School Survival Guide Video by Gary Olsen and the Students of Washington Middle School Audio Engineering and Location Technical Director Brandon Noel If you're a fifth grader about to enroll in middle school, apprehension is understandably high. The students at Washington Middle School realize this, and they participated in a grand project to create a video that would assuage the fears many incoming 6th graders have about attending middle school. And here's the best part. There was no script in this production. Just a list of topics that students improvised in their own individual ways to convey what is important. Each scene was inspired by questions asked on camera by actual incoming 6th graders. "We wanted to make sure viewers realize that middle school is not some scary place but a supportive and actually fun place to be," explains Dan Powers, guidance counselor and project lead on this series of videos for incoming middle schoolers. The project was made possible by a grant from the Iowa Department of Education Safe and Drug Free Schools initiative.
